EPA Radon Zones by County

As you can see from the map, Metro Atlanta counties are in the red zone with average radon levels greater than 4 pCi/L.

Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today behind smoking. Radon is colorless, odorless, and radioactive. It forms naturally from the decay (breaking down) of radioactive elements like uranium. Radon gas in the soil and rock can move into the air and into underground water and surface water.

How radon gas enters a house

Radon decays quickly and throws off tiny radioactive particles.

When inhaled, these radioactive particles can damage the cells that line the lung. Long-term exposure to radon has been proven to cause lung cancer. If a person has been exposed to radon it will take 44 years for 75 percent of the radon in the lungs to become harmless. When one of these particles damages a cell the onset of lung cancer can take a minimum of 5 years or longer to develop but onset can begin in 15 to 25 years due to how long the particles stay in the lungs.

Any home can have a radon problem including new or old homes, well-sealed or leaky homes, and homes with or without a basement. In fact, nearly one out of every 15 homes in the United States is estimated to have an elevated radon level (4 pCi/L or more).

Why Test for Radon?

The EPA and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk. Homes next to each other can have different radon levels. Do not rely on test results from other homes in your neighborhood. Radon testing is the only way to determine if your home’s radon level is safe.

How Can I Solve the Problem?

The good news is you can mitigate the problem. The first step is radon testing. Peach State Home Inspections is an interNACHI Certified Radon Testing home inspection company with the most up-to-date measuring equipment. We use the Sun Nuclear Model 1030 RadonSentinel, which yields extremely accurate results. Once Peach State Home Inspections is contacted, we will place one of the devices in your home and leave it for 48 hours of continuous measurement. We’ll provide the results within 24 hours after pickup.

EPA Recommendations for Home Buyers and Sellers

The EPA recommends testing your home for radon if you are buying or selling. If your home has a radon level of 4 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher, fix it. Even lower levels still pose a risk and can be reduced. Testing is essential because you cannot see, smell, or taste radon. Testing all homes below the third floor is recommended.
