I don’t see any visible mold. Why do I need mold testing?
- There are times when mold is not obvious but there is an unpleasant “moldy” smell in some parts of the house. Perhaps a basement, perhaps a bathroom, perhaps a kitchen. A mold test can reveal elevated mold levels and where it is located.
- Have there been any plumbing leaks or other water drainage issues? Mold levels may be high and they may be located in hard-to-see areas or even behind walls.
- Do any family members have health problems that don’t have an obvious cause? Maybe they show symptoms like coughing, sneezing, runny nose, or headaches? Mold testing can indicate whether mold exists that could be the culprit.
- Do you have a tenant-landlord dispute over potential mold? Get answers.
- If you’re involved in a real estate transaction mold testing can protect buyers AND sellers.
- If you are diligent about indoor air quality a test can bring peace of mind.
Why should I hire a certified mold testing professional? Can I just buy a home mold test kit from a home improvement store and do it myself?
- DIY Mold Tests are frequently misleading and inaccurate, often because of sampling errors. It’s always best to have a certified professional take the tests and review the results.
- Virtually every home has some mold. A petri dish from a DIY test just tells you mold exists. That will not be particularly helpful.
- A mold professional knows how to spot issues that are not obvious to untrained inspectors.
From the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website:
“Sampling for mold should be conducted by professionals who have specific experience in designing mold sampling protocols, sampling methods, and interpreting results. Sample analysis should follow analytical methods recommended by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), or other professional organizations.”
